The Committee recommends concurrence as amended as
follows:
Whereas, Darwin's theory of evolution is still being published in our
nation's textbooks as the authentic and only approach to the origin of life;
and
Whereas, this theory standing alone teaches that time, chance and
natural selection account for all things that exist to the total exclusion of a
creator God; and
Whereas, today Darwin and his theories have been discounted in the
fields of biology, genetics, botany, chemistry, geology, astronomy, physics,
paleontology, archaeology, mathematics and other related fields; and
Whereas, each new day brings new evidence of the closer relationship of
scientific fact and a created order; and
Whereas, as Christians me must not overlook the impact of teaching only
evolution to our children; and
Whereas, these children, our hope for the future, deserve the
intellectual challenge of reviewing the scientific facts on both sides of the
issue, equally presented, so that they can make informed decisions based on
logic, reason and data and not on heresy, conjecture or speculation;
Therefore be it resolved that the 2000 General Conference direct the
Board of Church and Society to being meaningful consultation
for the purpose of bringing to our schools textbooks which present both
evolution and creation, with all scientific facts available, in an atmosphere
of equal emphasis and instruction.
Be it resolved:
The 2000 General Conference direct the Board of Discipleship, working within
its own structure, to develop study materials for all levels of the church
which will bring all the theories of evolution and creation to the churches in
a manner which will compare emerging areas of compatibility and areas yet
unresolved in a reconciling approach to the relationship involved.
