1704. Membership of the General Commission--1. The commission shall
be constituted quadrennially, and its members and all officers elected by it
shall hold office until their successors have been chosen. The commission may
fill interim vacancies during a quadrennium where not otherwise provided by the
Discipline.

The commission shall be composed of twenty-four members in the following
manner: ten members elected by the General Conference on nomination of the
Council of Bishops, in which number it is recommended that at least one shall
be from the central conferences; two bishops (one of whom shall come from the
central conferences); five presidents of the jurisdictional commissions on
archives and history, or where no commission exists or any disciplinary
conflict arises, a person designated by the jurisdictional College of Bishops;
and seven additional members elected by the general commission. It is
recommended that careful consideration be given to people with special
interests and skills in the history of United Methodism and that careful
consideration be given to inclusiveness, including representation from men,
women, age levels, all racial and ethnic groups, and central conferences.
