Act of Repentance

THE PURPOSE OF THIS SERVICE

This service is sponsored jointly by The General Commission on Christian Unity and Interreligious Concerns and The Council of Bishops of The United Methodist Church. Generated out of a concern for the division of the Methodist family because of racism, the General Commission asked for time at General Conference to provide a Liturgy of Repentance for racism within our body against those who left and against those who stayed. A study guide was developed to explore the historical roots of racism as a church-dividing issue and to prepare United Methodists for acts of repentance. Tonight’s liturgy is a result of these efforts.
