Delegates elect four to University Senate

CLEVELAND (UMNS) – General Conference delegates elected four people to the peer review organization of United Methodist academic and theological institutions.

The four, each with ties to academia, were elected May 9 to the 25-member University Senate. The senate was established by the Methodist General Conference of 1892 and is an affiliate of the denomination's Board of Higher Education and Ministry. It monitors, evaluates and approves the 123 colleges, universities, preparatory and theological schools related to the denomination. Most of the senate’s members are professional educators and administrators at United Methodist-related institutions of higher education.

The new members are Trudie Kibbe (Preciphs) Reed, president of Philander Smith College, Little Rock, Ark.; the Rev. David Maldonado, the newly appointed president of Iliff School of Theology, Denver; Maxie D. Dunnam, president of Asbury Theological Seminary, Wilmore, Ky.; and Charlene Black, associate vice president for academic affairs and dean at Georgia Southern University, Statesboro, Ga.

In other matters related to education, delegates on May 8 approved a resolution authorizing the United Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministry to develop an endowment fund for the 11 historically black colleges and universities of the United Methodist Church. Currently, the academic institutions collectively share an endowment of $205 million. The action by the General Conference mandates the development and implementation of 25-year plan to raise $300 million in endowment funds. Private programs under the leadership of the churchwide Board of Higher Education and Ministry will raise the funds.
